ADHD Medication for Autistic People
If you have ADHD (with or without autism), medication might help.
"Medication didn't make me a different person. It made me more able to BE myself—the version that can actually start tasks." — AuDHD adult
Stimulants
The most common ADHD medications.
Types: Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) and Amphetamines (Adderall, Vyvanse).
Effects: Better focus, easier to start tasks, reduced impulsivity, can feel calming (not "speedy" for ADHD brains).
Non-Stimulants
For people who can't take or don't respond well to stimulants.
Types: Atomoxetine (Strattera), Guanfacine (Intuniv), Bupropion (Wellbutrin).
Effects: More gradual improvement, sometimes better for anxiety, less sleep disruption. Takes 4-6 weeks to work.
For Autistic People Specifically
Autistic people often respond differently to ADHD medication. Not worse—just different. Your prescriber should know about your autism.
Sensory sensitivity applies to medication too. You might feel effects more intensely.
"Start low, go slow" is especially important.
Masking might get easier. More focus = more energy for social situations. This isn't always good—watch for increased burnout.
"On medication, I can actually START things. The thing I want to do and the thing I'm doing can be the same thing now." — Autistic adult with ADHD
Side Effects to Watch
Common (often temporary): Reduced appetite, dry mouth, initial sleep changes.
Talk to prescriber if: Anxiety significantly worsens, feeling "flat" or emotionally numb, heart palpitations.
What Medication Can and Can't Do
CAN help: Focus, task initiation, impulsivity control.
CAN'T fix: All executive function issues, autism-related challenges, time blindness, interest-based attention.
Medication isn't "cheating." Glasses aren't cheating for vision. ADHD medication is a tool—use it if it helps.
Making the Decision
Medication is one option, not the only option. Find a good prescriber who asks about your autism, starts with lower doses, and believes your experience.
