Self-Regulation Patterns

Many autistic people find their own ways to regulate—some healthier than others.

Why Self-Regulation Is Necessary

Autistic nervous systems can be more easily dysregulated and slower to return to baseline. Without support, people find their own solutions.

Food Patterns

"I'll eat the same thing for weeks, then suddenly it disgusts me." — Autistic adult

Food cycling, safe foods, drowning things in sauce—all valid strategies. See Eating Disorders if patterns become concerning.

Healthy vs. Concerning

Healthy: Stimming, sensory tools, music, special interests. See Stimming and Sensory Toolkit.

Warning signs: Substances interfering with function, self-harm for regulation, isolation preventing necessary activities.

Self-regulation isn't optional—it's necessary. The question isn't whether to regulate, but how.
