Common Invalidation
Statements that dismiss autistic experiences. Knowing these patterns helps.
"Everyone Is a Little Autistic"
"We're talking about constant, not occasional." — Autistic adult
Occasional distraction ≠ unable to start tasks. The difference is frequency and intensity.
"You Don't Look Autistic"
What does autism "look like"? Usually their stereotype—which was wrong.
Response: "This IS what autism looks like."
"Have You Tried Just..."
Just making eye contact. Just being more social.
"I've been exhausted from trying." — Autistic adult
Effort can't rewire neurology.
"Autism Is Overdiagnosed Now"
"'Quiet kids who need help coming out of their shell' definitely were autistic." — Autistic adult
Autism was underdiagnosed before.
"You're Using It as an Excuse"
Explanation ≠ excuse. Understanding WHY something is hard means addressing the actual issue.
"You Just Need to Try Harder"
If trying harder worked, it would have worked by now.
Protecting Yourself
You don't have to educate everyone. Choose your battles.
Find your people. Autistic community, allies who believe you.
Boundaries are valid. Leave conversations that hurt.
Invalidation says more about them than you. Your experience is real.
