Medical & Healthcare

Autistic people frequently encounter dismissal in medical settings.

"I was diagnosed with BPD, bipolar, anxiety, depression, OCD. Turns out it was autism the whole time." — Late-diagnosed autistic adult

The Diagnosis Collection

Before autism is recognized, many accumulate other diagnoses. Each symptom gets labeled separately. The unifying explanation—autism—isn't considered.

"You Don't Look Autistic"

What they see: Eye contact (learned), speaking clearly (rehearsed), appearing calm (masking).

What they miss: Exhaustion after, script preparation before.

Symptoms Dismissed as Anxiety

"Standard CBT asking 'what's the worst that could happen?' fails because the worst DOES happen." — Autistic adult

Medical Sensory Challenges

Healthcare settings are sensory nightmares: fluorescent lights, chemical smells, long waits, being touched by strangers.

Strategies

Before: Write down symptoms/questions, bring support person.

During: Use written notes, ask for written instructions.

If dismissed: Document concerns, seek second opinions, find autism-affirming providers.

Physical Health Connections

Autistic people have higher rates of: EDS/Hypermobility, GI issues, chronic migraines.

Finding autism-informed healthcare is worth the search.
